Cinnamon Apple Coffee Cake

This was a coffee cake that was often served for breakfast when company was coming

¾ cup sugar
¼ cup soft butter
1 egg
½ cup milk
1 ½ cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
Sliced apples
½ cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons flour
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons melted butter
½ cup chopped nuts (optional)

Mix sugar, ¼ cup butter and egg. Stir in milk, 1 ½ cups flour, baking powder, and salt. Spread ½ of batter in greased and floured round 9 inch pan. Put a layer of peeled and sliced apples on the batter. Mix brown sugar, 2 teaspoons flour, cinnamon, 2 teaspoons butter and nuts to make streusel. Sprinkle ½ of the streusel on top of the apples. Drop the remaining batter on top with a tablespoon and sprinkle with the remaining streusel. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. You can double the batch and bake it in a 9 x 13 inch baking pan.
